Southwest Airlines is in discussions with the state to enter the Hawaii market by as early as next year. It is expected that they will be met with capacity issues and competition as gates are limited and Hawaiian Airlines is a lower cost carrier. As the #1 West Coast carrier, their entry into the Hawaii market is seen as a need to service their customer base and network. According to Hawaii Tourism USA, Hawaiiʻs six largest carriers had 1.97 million airline seats servicing the islands during the first quarter of 2017, and the number is expected to increase 16.1% to 2.29 million during the first quarter of 2018.
